About Our Chapel
Entering the historic Morning Star Lutheran Church Chapel is like taking a step back in time – to a period when churches were crafted by hand, with a combination of beauty and simplicity.
The chapel dates back to 1906 and is among a handful of Gothic Revival churches in the Charlotte region, yet it also has all the modern conveniences needed for weddings, other types of religious services, family gatherings, and even meetings.
First, about the history. Morning Star is the oldest Lutheran congregation in Mecklenburg County, formed in 1775. The original church is about a half-mile away, but the congregation moved to the current chapel site in the 19th Century. Two log-hewn churches at the chapel site were lost to fire, and the chapel was built in the early 20th Century of wood and bricks provided by church members.
Church records show members arriving by horse and buggy, but today’s visitors use a paved parking lot. An $800,000 renovation in 2004, paid through a bequest from the late Ruth Rice Teeter, a Morning Star member, has modernized the chapel facility.
The chapel retains its historic feel, with wood floors and stained glass windows. It has a piano and pump organ, and it’s adjacent to the old church cemetery. But the chapel connects with a modern gathering hall, rest rooms, and a small kitchen. The chapel can seat about 85 people (65 in the pews, 20 more in folding chairs), and the meeting room has a capacity of about 40.
There is a modern HVAC system and AV capability, along with a handicapped entrance.
Morning Star Lutheran has a new facility about a quarter-mile west of the chapel, but the church still holds Thanksgiving and Easter Vigil and Sonrise services at the chapel.

Can I visit the chapel before I book?
Yes. Chapel visits are by appointment only. Please contact us to book a time.
What is the cost to book the chapel for a wedding?
The chapel rents for $400.00. That gives you 1 hour for your rehearsal and 2 hours on the day of your wedding. If you need more time, the cost is $100.00 per hour.
Does the chapel rent for events other than weddings?
Yes, if you have a special event the cost is $150 for 2 hours.
Is there a pastor available?
We do have two pastors and a minister of music but they set their own schedules and cost. You may use your own minster, but they must be a ordained Christian minister. Pre-marital counseling is optional. They can be contacted at 704-847-4502.
Is there a piano and/or sound system?
There is a piano (tuned 4 times a year) and organ for your use. There is also a sound system, but it can only be used by pre-approved personnel at a cost of $100.00. We will handle arranging the sound system personnel.
Is there room for a reception?
The chapel does have a small caterers kitchen and reception room. We also have 6 foot round and rectangular tables and chairs that are included in the cost. The only alcohol permitted is wine for communion. The property does not permit any outside tents to be set up on the grounds.
Is there a bride's room?
We do not have a bride’s room. We suggest that brides be fully ready upon arrival except for their wedding attire and can change into their gowns when they arrive and wait in the managers office until the ceremony begins.
