A singular event will be taking place right here, in Charlotte NC! Charlotte’s own Community/Professional Handbell Ensemble CHARLOTTE BRONZE will be bringing two outstanding guest artists to collaborate with the ensemble in a first-ever concert billed as LATIN! JAZZ! BLUES!
“This is certainly a one-of-a-kind event,” Artistic Director Tim Waugh commented. “We’re looking at several world premiere offerings that handbell concerts don’t normally provide. We’re bringing together Lady D, West Virginia’s First Lady of Soul, to sing with us, and Maestro Carlos E Rivera-Aponte, premiere handbell conductor from Puerto Rico, to conduct us.”
The concert will bring an eclectic gathering of Latin music, including music from the Puerto Rican Folk tradition, and some vocal jazz standards, including “Take 5,” “Fly Me To the Moon,” and “Autumn Leaves.”
Maestro Rivera comes from Aibonito, Puerto Rico where he founded one of the world’s finest handbell ensembles. He has continued his work throughout the region, founding bell programs in Venezuela, The Dominican Republic, and Guatemala.
Lady D is recognized as the First Lady of Soul in WV. In 2008, Lady D’s original song, “Go Higher” was chosen as the best song for the Inauguration of President Obama, and earned her an invitation to perform at the Obama for Change Inaugural Ball in 2009.
The concerts are free and open to the public. Join us on Saturday 20 May at 4pm at Morning Star Lutheran Church!
